25 Youngest Teams in College Football

Youth plays a large part in a lot of sports today. College football is not exactly one of them. When it comes to the 25 youngest teams in the country, there are squads of various talent levels.

In a lot of other sports, such as college basketball, the younger teams are generally near the top of the country. That is not necessarily the case when it comes to college football.

It oftentimes takes a player a few years to develop physically in order to compete at a high level.

With that being said, the oldest teams are not always the best. Georgia State is the newest FBS member and also has some of the most experience with 14 seniors and five sophomores starting. Florida Atlantic has 16 senior starters, and South Alabama has 15 seniors and seven sophomores starting.?

There are a lot of ways to go about finding the youngest teams in the country for this upcoming college football season.

The following list is based on starters only. Freshman starters are given one point, sophomore starters are given two, junior starters three and senior starters four. The team with the lowest point total is at the top of this list.

There are teams from all over the country, but very few squads have more underclassmen starting than upperclassmen.

Do some of the top teams in the country make the list, or is it a bunch of no-name schools?

Read on to find out.

*Special teams are not included.

*Depth charts are according to Scout.com.

Aligarh Muslim University withdraws dress code diktat for hostel girls

LUCKNOW: Facing flak over its order to girl students to wear only "salwar kameez" along with a "dupatta" on the varsity campus, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration on Saturday withdrew it.

A senior official said that the move was aimed at ensuring discipline on the campus and hostels but had been taken back "after society raised objections".

The administration had earlier this week posted notices at its girls hostel ordering them to wear only "salwaar kameez", which is "proper, decent-looking and appropriate dress".

The order, signed by the provost of Abdullah Hall for Girls, had also come with a warning that if the hostel inmates were found breaching the rule, they would have to cough up a fine of Rs 500.

The girls were also barred from keeping more than one mobile phone.

The girls, unlike boys, are not entitled to Sunday excursions out of the campus, as it is felt it could "vitiate the moral standards and norms of a decent society", a professor said.

Earlier in June, in another controversial order, AMU's vice-chancellor Lt. Gen. (retd) Zameeruddin Shah had, in an open letter, instructed male students to wear "sherwanis" if they wanted to meet him.

AMU is a public university, funded by the central government and a seat of quality education for millions ever since educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan founded it in 1875.

Delle Donne to miss All-Star game with concussion

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) ? Elena Delle Donne will miss the WNBA All-Star game on Saturday while recovering from a concussion.

The No. 2 pick in the draft was injured in the Chicago Sky's loss to Washington on Wednesday when she was going for a loose ball with a minute left in the third quarter.

"It's unfortunate that I am unable to be a part of All-Star weekend," Delle Donne said. "I was very excited to join the other players for a memorable experience. It's upsetting not only for me but also for the fans who voted for me. The most important thing for me at this time is to rest and recover for the second half of the season."

Delle Donne, who is averaging 18.2 points a game, is the first rookie to lead the All-Star voting and will be replaced on the Eastern Conference roster by Atlanta's Erika de Souza.

Top draft pick Brittney Griner won't play but will attend the league's showcase game this weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena. Griner is still recovering from a sprained left knee and was replaced on the roster by veteran Tina Thompson on Thursday.

A former star at Delaware, Delle Donne helped guide Chicago to first place in the Eastern Conference, and the Sky are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Had Delle Donne and Griner both played, it would have been the first time in league history that two rookies from the same class started an All-Star game. Sue Bird and Catchings started in 2002. Catchings missed her entire 2001 rookie season because of a knee injury.

Griner, Delle Donne and fellow rookie Skylar Diggins have already provided a boost to the league, increasing ratings, attendance and merchandise sales. TV household ratings have doubled on ESPN2 compared to last season, and the game pitting Griner against Delle Donne drew the league's highest regular-season ratings in nine years.

Southwest flight landed nose first at LaGuardia, NTSB says

The metal strain on the plane struts of the Southwest plane caused the front landing gear to collapse, according to a preliminary report from the NTSB. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Southwest Airlines plane that touched down hard at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Monday, skidding and sparking on the runway, landed nose down with the front landing gear contacting the ground first and collapsing, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

The agency on Thursday released what it called ?factual information? from the accident of the Boeing 737-700, citing video recordings and other sources.

A spokeswoman for Southwest told the Associated Press the landing was not ?in accordance? with operating procedures for the airline.

The NTSB update on Flight 345 was consistent with earlier statements that the landing gear "collapsed rearward and upward into the fuselage, damaging the electronics bay that houses avionics."?

The NTSB said that the aircraft?s speed was approximately 133 knots when it pitched down approximately 3 degrees at landing and then skidded to a stop within about 19 seconds.

Investigators were poring over more than 27 hours of recorded data from the entire flight from Nashville to New York as well as two hours of voice recordings from the cockpit.

Of the 150 people aboard the flight, three passengers, the two pilots and three flight attendants were treated and released from the hospital with the minor injuries.

The hard landing, which forced an evacuation via the plane's emergency chutes, shut down parts of the airport overnight as crews worked to remove the aircraft.

Just days after a mass jailbreak saw an estimated 500 convicts escape from Iraqi prisons, militants at an improvised checkpoint last night killed 14 Shiite truck drivers outside of Baghdad, underscoring the rapid deterioration of security in Iraq.

According to the Associated Press, the attackers created a police diversion by first firing on a nearby military base and communications tower before stopping the convoy of Shiite truck drivers. The gunmen stole the drivers? vehicles, reports Agence France-Presse.

"Militants blocked their way near Sulaiman Pek, checked their IDs and executed them by shooting them in the heads and chest," Talib Mohammed, the mayor of the town near where the attack took place, told Reuters by phone.

Reuters reports that sectarian violence has been on the rise in Iraq:

Sunni Islamist militants have been regaining momentum in their insurgency against the Shi'ite-led government in recent months, invigorated by the civil war in neighboring Syria, which has inflamed sectarian tensions in Iraq and the wider region.

Last month The Christian Science Monitor?s Dan Murphy wrote about violence in Iraq and how it stacked up against other conflicts around the globe. He noted that Iraq is less violent than it was during the war, but the press ?frequently wonders if the country could descend into war again. What if the war never ended??

May was the most violent month in Iraq since June 2008, with 1,045 people killed. The next most violent month since 2008? This April, with 712 people killed.

Death has stalked Iraqis in the form of car bombs on mosques and markets, assassinations of political figures, and organized massacres of security forces, prompting many to wonder if Iraq could plunge back into another sectarian civil war like the one that raged in the middle of the last decade, and claimed over 3,000 lives a month at its height.

"Systemic violence is ready to explode at any moment if all Iraqi leaders do not engage immediately to pull the country out of this mayhem," UN special representative to Iraq, Martin Kobler, said earlier this month.

The website Iraq Body Count, which gathers statistics on confirmed deaths from violence in Iraq, reports a civilian death count of 759 so far for the month of July. That makes it on track to be one of the deadliest months this year, and since 2008.

Attacks have not only escalated in recent months, but they have also become ?more audacious,? reports a separate AP story. The prison break on Sunday, carried out by the Al Qaeda-aligned Islamic State in Iraq, put this on full display, emphasizing the success recent attacks have had on destabilizing the government.?

?This attack is unlike any other attack when they target a coffee shop or a public market,? Hamid Fadhil, a political science professor at Baghdad University, told The New York Times after the prison attack. ?They are targeting the most secured place with big numbers of security forces.?

?If Al Qaeda can attack a prison, it means they can do whatever they want whenever they want,? lawyer Meluk Abdil Wahab told The Times.

Mr. Murphy from the Monitor wrote in a separate story that the attacks on Abu Ghraib and Taji hold weighty symbolism for Iraqis. Abu Ghraib, for example, served as a pre-execution torture house for mainly political rivals under Saddam Hussein.

Iraq's sectarian civil war in some ways never really ended, US protestations that the "surge" brought peace to Iraq to the contrary. The Shiite dominated government has behaved autocratically, clamped down on freedom of speech, continued the tradition of torture in Iraq's prisons and police stations, and cut Sunni Arabs out of the political process.

Not surprisingly some of the Sunni Arabs who were promised a seat at the table in the "new Iraq" but have instead been systematically marginalized are taking up arms again. Lately they've been given heart by Sunni jihadi successes across the border in Syria (where Bashar al-Assad is allied with Shiite Iran and enjoys at least the tepid support of the Maliki government), with Iraqi jihadis from Anbar and other border provinces playing a prominent role in the Jabhat al-Nusra insurgent group, and those returning home reinvigorating their comrades.?

I was listening to someone, somewhere, on something -- not really sure where, and it doesn't matter -- but someone said that they'd rather be alone than have friends who make them feel alone. It's probably been said by many people in many different ways, but for some reason, that saying has attached itself to me as I engage in my twice-daily social networking while comparing it to what I'm actually doing in my downtime that doesn't qualify as "work."

Social networks make us feel alone. I'm not claiming to be the first to notice this, but now that there's a social network for pictures, for videos, for 140-character updates, for business networking, for food, for our pets...

Microsoft pushes U.S. Customs to enforce phone import ban

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp, which won a ban last year on importing some phones made by a Google Inc subsidiary, filed a motion in a U.S. court on Friday asking the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection to enforce the measure.

The U.S. International Trade Commission, which hears a long list of high-tech patent complaints, said in May 2012 that Google's Motorola Mobility infringed a Microsoft patent for generating and synchronizing calendar items. It barred any infringing Motorola Mobility device from being imported into the United States.

All phones with Google's Android software are affected by the ban, Microsoft said. But Google said that it should have applied to only some Motorola Mobility Android phones.

That order was to have gone into effect 60 days after it was issued but, according to Microsoft's court filing, it still has not been enforced.

"CBP (Customs and Bureau Protection) has repeatedly allowed Motorola to evade that order based on secret presentations that CBP has refused to share with Microsoft," the complaint said.

Google argued that Microsoft tried to broaden the order beyond what the ITC had intended.

"U.S. Customs appropriately rejected Microsoft's effort to broaden its patent claims to block Americans from using a wide range of legitimate calendar functions, like scheduling meetings, on their mobile phones," said Matt Kallman, a Google spokesman.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Customs declined comment.

The filing is the latest salvo in an international smartphone patent war that has embroiled a half dozen companies in lawsuits filed in about a dozen countries.

The dispute is a sign that deciding which product infringes a patent is harder now that the world has gone high tech, and that Customs may not have the needed expertise to make that determination and perhaps should rely on the ITC, said Deanna Tanner Okun, a former ITC chairman who is a partner at Adduci, Mastriani & Schaumberg, LLP.

"Problems have increased. The system is outdated," she said. "They're using practices and procedures that are 20 years old."

Bill would outlaw job, housing discrimination for troops, vets

A bill protecting current and former service members from discrimination in housing and employment was introduced Thursday in the House and Senate.

The Veterans and Servicemembers Employment Rights and Housing Act of 2013 would build on legal and financial protections already in law.

Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., chief sponsor of the House version of the bill, HR 2654, said it is a response to complaints he has received from service members and veterans about being denied housing and turned down for jobs solely because of their military service.

?If you fight for our country, you should not have to fight for a job when you come home,? Kilmer said.

A federal law, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, already prohibits discrimination in hiring for veterans, but it does not specifically cover current service members looking for part-time jobs. Service members and veterans also are not a specifically protected class under federal housing discrimination laws.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., is chief sponsor of the Senate version, S 1281. ?By making military service a protected status, this bill will ensure that those who sacrificed to keep us safe are not discriminated against when they return home,? he said. ?Shamefully, veterans who served our country return from deployment and too often struggle to find a job or a place to call home.?

The bill would add military status to existing anti-discrimination laws for housing and employment, and set up a process for those who face discrimination to get legal assistance.

Kilmer previously sponsored a similar Washington state law.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets and the National Guard Association of the United States have endorsed the bill.

Current Nuclear Energy Plants and Public Communication | The ...

Nuclear Communication

A good friend shared a link to a blog titled Taking physics to new audiences: a realisation. It is a wonderful story about a particle physicist who has a twin sister who is a professional historian.

Following a conversation about nuclear energy, the physicist has avoided talking to her sister about what she does at work.

The last time we discussed science was when I was in my fourth year of my undergraduate physics course at Melbourne University. We ended up in a heated argument about nuclear power in which she refused to acknowledge or even discuss the possibility that it might not be evil incarnate destined to mutate our children into three-eyed monsters in the way that she supposed had happened in Chernobyl. I believe our conversation ended with her announcing she had no interest in science and that I knew nothing. Well, that was that.

This situation apparently lasted for about six years before the physicist decided to broach the subject again; this time, the conversation took a decidedly different turn and the historian sister displayed a dramatically different response. Here is the line that worked its wonders and opened a new topic of discussion for the accomplished women ? the professional physicist and the professional historian.

I?m currently working on designing a high power proton accelerator to drive something called an Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactor. It?s nuclear fission but without the nasty a) waste, b) proliferation risk, c) meltdowns and d) public perception issues. It uses Thorium instead of Uranium in the core & doesn?t produce plutonium. As a bonus, it could transmute the long lived nuclear waste of existing power plants.

The physicist, probably unconsciously, successfully implemented a communications strategy that would make Dr. Peter Sandman proud. She followed at least three of his five recommended steps towards outrage management and convinced her sister that her work really wasn?t ?evil incarnate?. She acknowledged prior misbehavior, acknowledged current problems and did so with humility.

Unfortunately, her success may not have been a step forward for the beneficial use of nuclear energy to solve the pressing problem of producing large quantities of emission free power without polluting our common atmosphere.

Here is the comment that I submitted on High Heels in the Lab. I hope that it gets through moderation and begins a useful discussion both there and here.

Suzie ? Unfortunately, your story of communications success makes my own self-appointed task of sharing the good news about nuclear fission just a little bit harder. I don?t agree that there is anything actually ?nasty? about uranium. Plutonium, for all of the demonization it has received over the past 55 years, is actually a very valuable fission fuel material that contains 2 million times as much energy per unit mass as oil.

The volume of the world?s used nuclear fuel is quite tiny compared to the amount of emission free energy it has produced. The really good news is that it still contains about 95% of the initial potential energy. There are known ways to safely use a substantially larger portion of that energy before the material has to be isolated as ?waste?.

I applaud the fact that people are working hard to make nuclear fission better and to find ways of converting what some think of as waste into energy, but the nuclear technology that we already have working today is FAR safer and environmentally friendly than all other competing products. Keeping ?old? nuclear plants running is a much more important benefit than keeping old cars running to prevent new ones from being produced; a single large nuclear plant can produce about 8 billion kilowatt hours of zero carbon electricity every year. If one is shut down out of misplaced fear, no matter what replaces it, the world?s carbon footprint will increase.

In the past two years, dozens of useful nuclear plants have been forced off line in an irrational response to a massive natural disaster that destroyed three nuclear plants without causing a single injury due to radiation. As a direct result of the excess fear, the world?s fossil fuel industry has captured an increase in sales worth several tens of billions of dollars.

Keep up the good work in trying to share the excitement of solving problems, but please take a harder look at the reasons why self-sustained nuclear fission (the kind that does not need any expensive accelerators) has such a negative ?public perception issue.?

Rod Adams, Publisher, Atomic Insights

My issue with the apparent success is that the historian will probably still fight the use of any nuclear fission technology that is not produced using particle accelerators and thorium. She will still feel justified in thinking of nuclear waste as a big issue and still worry about the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation with regard to existing commercial nuclear power plants. No matter how successful the physicist is in her research efforts, it is going to be a very long time before any significant quantities of power are produced using subcritical reactors supported by particle accelerators.

Changing topics completely, I recommend a visit to Canadian Energy Issues where Steve Aplin has once again explained why Ontario?s mostly nuclear supplied grid is so much cleaner than it would be if that power was produced by burning natural gas instead.

Golf-Wagner takes control of Greenbrier Classic

July 6 | Sun Jul 7, 2013 3:30am IST

July 6 (Reuters) - American Johnson Wagner moved a step closer to winning his fourth PGA Tour title by seizing a two-shot lead after Saturday's third round of the Greenbrier Classic at White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia.

One stroke off the pace overnight on a tightly bunched leaderboard, Wagner took over at the top as he fired a sparkling six-under-par 64 on a sun-splashed day at The Greenbrier's Old White Course.

The 33-year-old Texan, who played the course several times a year when he was a student at nearby Virginia Tech, mixed seven birdies with a lone bogey to post a 14-under total of 196.

"Today my goal was to go out and make as many birdies as I could, and I did that," Wagner told Golf Channel after sinking a 12-foot birdie putt at the par-three last and pumping his right fist in delight.

"Now I've got to take the same attitude into tomorrow."

Fellow American Jimmy Walker, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, was alone in second after matching Wagner for the day's best score, storming home with five birdies in the last nine holes.

Swede Jonas Blixt (67) was a further two strokes back at 10 under, a shot better than Australians Steven Bowditch (69) and Matt Jones (66), and American teenager Jordan Spieth (67).

American Matt Every, the 36-hole leader after opening with scores of 69 and 62, tumbled backwards with four bogeys in the first seven holes on the way to a 74 and a five-under total of 205. (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes in Los Angeles; Editing by Gene Cherry)

Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan Top Country Albums, Airplay Charts

Florida Georgia Line

Florida Georgia Line

There are no fireworks this week on Billboard's country albums and airplay charts -- not much movement and not much new.

Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times bounces back into the No. 1 album slot, and Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" rolls in as the top song after a 12-week ascent.

Weston Burt's Lucky Sometimes EP racks up the week's highest debut, entering at No. 56. The only other new title to note is Jackson Taylor & the Sinners' Crazy Again, bowing at No. 69.

Re-entering are Old Crow Medicine Show's Carry Me Back (No. 62) and George Jones' The Great Lost Hits (No. 72).

Tim McGraw claims the highest-debuting new song, "Southern Girl," at No. 57, followed at No. 58 by Hunter Hayes' "Everybody's Got Somebody but Me" featuring Jason Mraz.

Gretchen Wilson enters at No. 59 with "Crazy."

The No. 2 through No. 5 albums, in that order, are Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story, Hayes' self-titled debut (last week's No. 1), Darius Rucker's True Believer and the multi-artist collection Now That's What I Call Country, Volume 6.

Trooping in behind "Crash My Party" in the Top 5 songs cluster Brad Paisley's "Beat This Summer," The Band Perry's "Done,", Jake Owen's "Anywhere With You" (last week's No. 1) and the Zac Brown Band's "Jump Right In."

Nielsen SoundScan reports that sales of the Top 75 country albums dropped 10 percent below those of last week -- from a total of 325,292 units to 273,464.

So who's doing what wrong?

Tropical Moths Use Ultrasonic Crotch Blasts to Confuse Attacking Bats

Tropical Moths Use Ultrasonic Crotch Blasts to Confuse Attacking Bats

In what has to be one of the most brilliant self-defense mechanisms ever developed, several species of tropical moths are able to rasp their genitals against their bodies to produce ultrasonic signals that confuse an attacking bat's acoustical targeting system.

Several species of Tiger Moth and Hawk Moth have been found to use this technique, which is thought to serve as a warning for bats to keep their distance as the insects are equipped with dangerous barbed legs they're not afraid to use. But it's also a clever way to jam a bat's radar, or at least momentarily throw them off target giving the moths a few precious seconds to make their escape. Not to mention the effect it has on the Tiger Moth bar scene. [Nature via Popular Science]

Editorial: High Fidelity Pure Audio starting a noble but losing battle

Editorial High Fidelity Pure Audio starting a noble but losing battle

The announcement is wrapped in an aura of déjà vu: Universal Music Group is marketing an uncompressed, high-end digital audio format for Blu-ray called High Fidelity Pure Audio (HFPA). Where standard CD audio is 44.1KHz at 16 bits, HFPA's A2D sampling rate clocks in at a sky-high 96KHz at 24 bits.

Analog elitists will maintain that even extremely refined sampling is inherently inferior to capturing unchopped waveforms, and while that argument is fun to test, it is academic in the context of wide consumer adoption. Can a new audiophile format gain traction in a technomusical world governed by convenience and mobility?

Stock markets rise ahead of US jobs report

LONDON (AP) ? Optimism that the world's major central banks will keep borrowing costs down boosted world stock markets Friday as investors awaited a key U.S. jobs report later in the day.

The prospect of continued monetary stimulus helped offset worries earlier in the week of a Chinese slowdown, a reemergence in European debt woes and the disruption of energy markets due to the military ouster of Egypt's president.

The biggest jumps were in Asia, where markets were catching up with the gains in Europe the day before. The rally was trigged by the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's statement that interest rates will remain low "for an extended period of time."

The ECB statement was echoed by the Bank of England and followed indications that the U.S. economy is growing ? but probably not fast enough for the U.S. Federal Reserve to rush into tapering off its stimulus program. Markets had been spooked in recent weeks at the prospect of such stimulus ending.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 closed up 2.1 percent to 14,309.97 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1.9 percent to 20,854.67

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 was up another 0.6 percent to 6,458.85 after jumping 3 percent the day before. Germany's DAX, however, edged down 0.2 percent to 7,979.19 while France's CAC-40 slipped 0.2 percent to 3,799.47.

Futures augured gains on Wall Street after the Independence Day holiday. Dow futures climbed 0.9 percent to 15,051 and S&P 500 futures gained by the same percentage to 1,623.10.

Investors were waiting for the U.S. government's monthly report on jobs due later Friday. Earlier in the week, Wall Street rallied after ADP, a payrolls processor, said that businesses added more jobs last month than analysts had expected. If the U.S. government confirms that Friday, it offers hope that the country's recovery is continuing.

Economists predict that the government will report that employers added 165,000 jobs last month, roughly in line with May's increase. The unemployment rate is expected to stay at a still-high 7.6 percent. Another solid month of hiring in June could signal the start of a stronger second half of the year for the U.S. economy.

But the market reaction may be mixed if the number is too strong, as that could lead some to believe the Fed will speed up the tapering of its stimulus program.

Elsewhere in Asia, Taipei's TAIEX jumped 1.4 percent to 8,001.82 while Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 edged up 1 percent to 4,841.70 and China's Shanghai Composite posted a small gain of 0.1 percent to 2,007.29.

Seoul's KOSPI fell 0.3 percent to 1,833.31 after shares of Samsung Electronic dropped nearly 4 percent after its quarterly operating profit failed to meet market expectations. The company estimated April-June earnings at a record high 9.5 trillion won ($8.3 billion) but that was below analysts' forecasts and investors are worried profit growth could slow as smartphone sales in rich nations reach a saturation point.

Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 21 cents at $101.03 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2879 from $1.2902. The dollar fell to 99.98 yen from 100.23 yen late Thursday.

Everything You Thought Was Real in The Great Gatsby Was Visual Effects

At this point even the most gullible of filmgoers must realize that nearly every movie has been digitally enhanced in one way or another. Long gone are the days when talented VFX artists were only called on to bring spaceships and dinosaurs to life; these days directors like Baz Luhrmann spend millions on effects to simply help bring even a few lamp posts to life.

Microsoft preps standalone gold Xbox 360 controller, brings new glitz to old consoles

Redesign notwithstanding, the Xbox 360 is clearly in its twilight years. Wouldn't it be nice to give the system a retirement gift? Microsoft thinks so, as it just unveiled a stand-alone gold version of its Chrome Series controller. The wireless gamepad shares the same transforming D-pad as past special editions, but ups the flashiness by a factor of ten -- and won't require that you buy a Star Wars-themed console at the same time. Microsoft ships the $55 gold controller worldwide this August, although it will only be available at a handful of stores, including GameStop and the Microsoft Store in the US.

5 memorable moments from the BET Awards

Charlie Wilson's red coat. Kendrick Lamar and Miguel. Nicki Minaj's chair. And just where did Chris Tucker go?

There were a lot of memorable things about Sunday night's BET Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles that are worth talking about Monday morning. Here are five to reflect on:

CHARLIE WILSON: The Gap Band singer and hip-hop producer's best friend, dubbed "Uncle Charlie" years ago by Snoop Dogg, wasn't content to just accept his lifetime achievement award. After dancing through a tribute from Stevie Wonder, Indie.Arie and Jamie Foxx and giving a long, inspiring speech, Timberlake persuaded Wilson to grab a mic. Wearing a fantastically bold red jacket and white pants, the 60-year-old took command of the show, performing a number of hits with assistance from Timberlake, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams, including "You Dropped a Bomb on Me." We're not going to say Uncle Charlie showed up that group of modern-day superstars, but there is video on the Internet this morning. Make your own decision.

THE FUTURE: Aside from Wilson, the night's most memorable stars were Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar and R&B singer Miguel, who both took victory laps after breakout years. Miguel won the night's first award, best male R&B/pop star over Chris Brown, and performed three times ? including once with Lamar on "How Many Drinks." And Lamar was the night's top winner tied with Drake with three awards, including best male hip-hop artist and best new artist. The 26-year-old used the moment to make an inspirational speech for "all my little homeboys and homegirls" in nearby Compton where he grew up: "I came up in that same county building. Food stamps. Welfare. Section 80. Check it out. You're looking at me on TV right now. This is living proof you can do anything you put your mind to. You feel me?"

CHRIS TUCKER'S NIGHT: With a dearth of stars in their seats (or the building) for the camera to throw to as the show started, host Chris Tucker turned to an unexpected target ? himself ? and found comedy gold by poking fun at his $11 million tax problem. "I'm gonna tell you why I'm doing it," he said of his hosting duties. "The IRS got me doing the BET Awards, I ain't gonna lie. They make me sick. They're back there right now counting my money and eating chicken. Pay your taxes, y'all." A little later he did a fairly impressive Michael Jackson impression, then disappeared for long stretches before finishing things off with the help of a poodle. The long vacuum gave comedian Kevin Hart the opening he needed as he exhorted the crowd to "turn it up!" in a few appearances and riffed off the cuff about the joy of being Nicki Minaj's chair.

BEWARE THE GUEST PERFORMER: Everyone take a lesson from Uncle Charlie: Don't let your guests show you up. Guests are supposed to enhance a star's song, not take it over. In a couple of cases, though, they high jacked things. Young Jeezy, for instance, had the run of the stage as a mic-bound Mariah Carey looked like a songbird trapped on a gilded set for their performance of "#Beautiful" with Miguel. And Erykah Badu nearly stole the mojo from both Lamar and Janelle Monae in surprise guest appearances.

MANDELA MOMENT: Don Cheadle took things in a serious direction, dedicating the show to ailing South African leader Nelson Mandela, 94. "We want to take a moment to send our thoughts and prayers to a man who literally changed the world, a man who once said, 'Our human compassion binds us the one to the other,'" Cheadle said. "This evening we'd like to offer prayers and support ? and hope ? to the extraordinary Nelson Mandela and his family."

Extreme temperatures in the West trigger health concerns

Heat warnings or advisories are posted in parts of eight western states with temperatures of 120 degrees not out of the question for parts of California, Nevada and Arizona into next week. Residents are advised to protect themselves and their pets. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

By Tracy Jarrett, NBC News

A sizzling heat wave sent temperatures soaring and records tumbling in Western states on Saturday, leading to one suspected heat-related death and prompting officials to urge people to stay inside and take extra precautions.

Las Vegas' McCarran airport tied a record for the day at 115 degrees, and at a National Weather Service office in the southwest section of the city the thermometer spiked up to 118 degrees. In Death Valley, Calif., it was 124 degrees.?

A Las Vegas Fire & Rescue crew responded to a report of an elderly man in cardiac arrest at residence without air conditioning on Saturday. When paramedics arrived, they found the man was dead, NBC station KSNV reported. The man, who was not identified, did have medical issues but paramedics characterized his death as heat-related.

Another elderly man whose car air conditioner went out while on a road trip fell sick, stopped and called 911. He was admitted to the hospital and reported in serious condition.?

It was so hot in Nevada that rangers at Lake Mead persuaded tourists not to hike, according to the National Park Service, which posted the warning on its Facebook page.

In Phoenix, the temperature rose to 119 degrees?? the fourth hottest day in recorded history in the desert city.

Two cities in Texas ??San Antonio (108 degrees) and Houston (107 degrees)???set all-time highs for the month of June.

?Where it is hot now it it?ll stay hot,? said Weather Channel meteorologist Mark Ressler.

Several records were also set in California, with Palm Springs hitting 122 degrees, beating the previous high from 1994, according to the National Weather Service.

While some states such as Colorado and New Mexico may be beginning to cool, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana will continue to experience all-time temperature highs at least for the next two weeks, Ressler said.

?The ridge doesn?t completely go away in the next 2 weeks, so temperatures will come down somewhat but there?s no time soon where it will turn into the east coast where they are experiencing below average ?temperatures, ? he said.

?The heat will stay west and there will be no great break in heat anytime soon.?

Such extreme weather was causing health concerns. On Friday, 200 people were treated for heat problems at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas, where it was 115 degrees.

Dr. Kein Reilly with University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine told NBC News Tucson affiliate KVOA that Arizona residents should stay inside and drink plenty of water.

"If you get dizzy or light headed those are some signs of dehydration. If you become confused that's a real warning sign. That's someone who needs to come into the emergency department," Reilly said.

Julie Jacobson / AP

From left, Subrina Madrid, Sarah Hudak, Jennifer, Shackelford, all of North Las Vegas, Nev., sit in the shallow waters along Boulder Beach at Lake Mead, Saturday, June 29, 2013 near Boulder City, Nevada. The three planned to spend the day at the lake to escape the heat in Las Vegas.

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless as well as elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners,? Phoenix, Ariz, Sheriff Joe Arpaio told NBC News affiliate KSNV.

Keeping people cool is not the only concern in the heat.

?If it?s hot for you it?s hot for your pet, and ultimately we are their voice so we are responsible for them. Use common sense,? said Bretta Nelson, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society.

Nelson suggests keeping your pets indoors and making sure they are hydrated. If you need to take your pet for a walk keep it quick, said Nelson. She also suggests foot booties for hot cement.

?It?s important to understand pets have to have shelter shade plenty of drinking water and if they don?t they can result in animal cruelty charges,? she said.

The same rules apply for people.

?As much as possible have constant water available and also stay inside in air conditioning those are two things I would suggest,? said Ressler.

Ressler said record highs are expected over the next few days, and record highs this time of year mean, ?it is extremely hot.?

NBC News' Jeff Black contributed to this report.
